even more of the same thing

sass

i've covered sass a little before (experimented with mixins), but didn't know you could use logic in it! this is gonna prove very useful in my future projects (once i get used to using them, that is).

things i was shocked to see in sass:

  • if, else if, and else conditions
  • for loops (good for grids!)
  • (for) each loops
  • while loops

...and by 11.22 i finished this sass course.

...and back to tussling with tailwind

before lunch, i finally got tailwindcss to work, but that also meant, my file's styling was drastically changed.

and then, i found out that tailwindcss was not actually properly configured for my project - i ended up taking a break at 13.40 after scrambling through the internet for two hours. (i'm quite certain that the tutorial on the tailwindcss website is not updated for the newest version - or it's just me being unfamiliar with project building.)

after the break, i decided to just continue without my preferred colours for the time being (the colour styling was my main struggle). i'd have to sort it out later on (or make my own custom classes for my colours in my input.css file! - foreshadowing).

by 18.22 i somewhat finished styling the home page with tailwind (still had to find out how to configure my custom colours and ensure everything was responsive - looking back at this, i remember i forgot about the mobile menu).

by 20.09 i am proud to say i had figured out how to add custom colours. just put them in your input.css file, and e.g. bg-[--green2]!

at the end of the tailwind tussling session, index.html was complete colour wise (i forgot to take a screenshot to show this).

updating the linkedin bio

previously on marsy's linkedin bio...

"I am currently a second year student at Birmingham City University, studying Computer Science (BSc Hons) who has a growing interest in data science, aspiring to be a software engineer.

The coding language I am most experienced in would be Python, thanks to learning it throughout my GCSE and A-level, using Python to code my A-level project of a chess AI bot, and recapping it in my first year of university. During my first year, I also tackled CSS and HTML which I was slightly familiar with (also thanks to some coding experience during sixth form for my project) which I am still aiming to be proficient in. Furthermore, in my second semester of my first year, I was able to develop my understanding of simple C++ commands to aid my Innovation project teammates' and I's product to flourish.

As for my interests within the computer science area, I do have a growing interest in data science which I have been feeding with knowledge acquired through DataCamp courses this summer (summer of '24) that I wish to continue for another year, or longer. In addition to data science, cyber security is another topic I wish to explore further, especially the aspects that relate to networking as someone who enjoyed the Network Fundamentals module in year one of university. Apart from the main branches of computer science, I am interested by those of which link technology and my hobbies together such as Music Production, Games Technology, Graphics Design, and Animation.

Regarding extracurriculars, I indulge my time in a variety of activities. I have artistic hobbies such as drawing, clay modelling, painting and crocheting. Additionally, I have a strong passion for music, enjoying analysing music composition of new music due to my instrumentalist background in performing piano and violin. Although I am taking a break from it for a while, in the past I have played competitive chess for the England Junior team, representing England in European tournaments, and more frequently representing the Warwickshire team in national chess tournaments and matches. Lastly, I have recently rediscovered my love for learning languages; back in secondary school, I chose to study both German and French for my GCSEs. So, you can find me refreshing my French and German vocabulary and grammar, or learning Japanese, in my free time."

to improve this, i can be more specific about my current technologies and technologies i’m comfortable with, as well as my plans and goals for the future:

"こんにちは! Bonjour! Hallo! Hi!

I'm Imogen, but you can call me Mars! I'm a second year Computer Science student with current interests in UX/UI design, full-stack web development and data science.

Originally, I chose my major out of a love for coding and a desire to study the many topics this field has to offer, but of course, my creativity has gravitated me towards branches of computer science that mix technical skill with the creative thinking.

Right now, I have many ideas I'm excited to pursue, but I'm currently focusing on the three projects I believe will help me grow both technically and creatively as a software engineer:

  • A portfolio site, duplicating the Spotify desktop app design (I love how responsive the application is, and of course, love Spotify). It's helping me strengthen my Figma and design skills, and learn how to bring the designs to life through code with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Bootstrap
  • A blog site to document my development journey of skills and personal interests over the summer before I return for my final year of university. With this project, I am learning Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js
  • A new and improved CompClub Hub web application backed by a database to allow users to manage clubs and club competitions using the XAMPP stack (see the Projects section of my profile for more information)

Throughout my time at university, I have discovered myself to be a reliable team leader, leading my group mates to success. Highlights include:

  • Winning 3rd place in the Innovative category at BCU's Innovation Festival 2024 with BookBot and TakeFive
  • Scoring the highest mark in our section on our presentation for our software design proposal and research

PS, if my banner photo looks familiar, it's Kamakura, Japan! I was lucky to visit Japan in January, and would love to return one day - maybe to even live or work there."
